WK3 8310 DIS1

Good research is driven by the synthesis of one’s passion or interest with a topic that has been under-studied in the professional literature. Out of that synthesis emerges a gap—an area in need of further study that is consistent with your interests—that defines the research problem. Clarifying the research problem takes time, effort, and thought.
Once you have developed your research problem, the research purpose and research question become self-evident.
What also becomes evident is your position with respect to the topic, the question, and what you hope to find. Qualitative research recognizes that the research “space” is shaped by both the participants and the researcher.

8310 Week 3 Discussion 1:
Conceptualizing a Qualitative Research Question
Good research is driven by the synthesis of one’s passion or interest with a topic that has been under-studied in the professional literature. Out of that synthesis emerges agap—an area in need of further study that is consistent with your interests—that defines the research problem. Clarifying the research problem takes time, effort, and thought.
Once you have developed your research problem, the research purpose and research question become self-evident.
What also becomes evident is yourpositionwith respect to the topic, the question, and what you hope to find. Qualitative research recognizes that the research “space” is shaped by both the participants and the researcher.
… the identities of both researcher and participants have the potential to impact the research process. Identities come into play via our perceptions, not only of others, but of the ways in which we expect others will perceive us. Our own biases shape the research process, serving as checkpoints along the way. Through recognition of our biases, we presume to gain insights into how we might approach a research setting, members of particular groups, and how we might seek to engage with participants (Bourke, 2014, p. 1).
For this Discussion, you will examine a research question based on the purpose for inquiry, a rationale for the study, and issues of positionality.
To prepare for this Discussion:
· Consider the research topic you are developing for your Major Assignment 1.
· Review Chapter 3 and 4 of the Ravitch and Carl text and use Table 3.1, page 65 to help you create a rationale using the questions as your guide.
· Review theFundamentals of Qualitative Research Methods: Developing a Qualitative Research Questionmedia program as a guideline to help you create a research question.
Assignment Task Part 1
Write four paragraphs and briefly explain in your post the following: please use the heading below over each paragraph. All 4 Paragraphs are to be 8 to 10 sentences Each.
1. The research purpose of your inquiry of your topic
2. The rationale
3. Issues of positionality
4. The research question
Be sure to support your main post and response post with reference to the week’s Learning Resources and other scholarly evidence in APA style.

Purpose of Inquiry
The purpose of this research study is to improve the students with special education needs in 5thgrade reading comprehension skills. The approach will be a mixed method which will address the research problem. The process will include assessments on comprehension to determine growth. Also, the teachers will receive a survey with open-ended questions and multiple choice to determine their views on the best reading strategies to improve comprehension as well as researching literature for reading strategies. Block (2008) suggests teaching students about their thinking (“metacognition”) while they are reading is one reading strategy.
The Rationale
This qualitative study will contribute to the literature to address the gap in reading comprehension in special education practice. Through this study, the focus will be on improving the reading comprehension of fifth-grade students with learning disabilities. This research will provide an understanding of interventions to increase the reading comprehension skills of students in special education. The Covid-19 pandemic presented educators with the crucial task to determine how to improve the students reading comprehension scores due to the shut-down and virtual learning the following school year. Teaching students the pre-requisite skills the students need to succeed in reading was limited during this recent history. Reading comprehension was difficult for most students in special education prior to Covid-19 and the gap has only increased more since the pandemic. Due to reading comprehension is a significant skill, students need to master to be successful in future grades. This research will support professional practice through literature in providing educators with evidence-based interventions to assist in improving the students reading comprehension skills.
Issues with Positionality
The fifth-grade students with learning disabilities on my caseload struggle with reading comprehension. The students are significantly below grade level due to the lack of the reading foundational skills missed during the pandemic shutdown. My focus is on locating evidence-based practices/interventions through the research to improve my students reading comprehension skills.
The Research Question
How will the focus on word studies increase the student’s reading comprehension in fifth-grade students with learning disabilities?
