According to the Merriam-Webster article, empathy is imagining or understanding one’s feelings, without having personally felt those feelings (Merriam-Webster, n.d.). Showing empathy with a client may help them feel understood and accepted. Empathy allows the worker to build rapport as well as understand and communicate better with the client (Gerance, n.d.). A few strategies to successfully demonstrate empathy include active listening, recognizing their emotions, restating their problem, positive body language, and eye contact. These influence the engagement process by improving outcomes of treatment plans (Gerdes & Segal, 2011).

Hello Dr. Smith and Class,
“Empathy allows the therapist to build a therapeutic alliance by apprehending the client’s perspective and goals, understanding there unique personality style and preferences, and communicating with them in an appropriate way.”(The power of empathy)This brings out better client treatment and results. This would include focusing on the client and giving them your undivided attention. You are listening and looking at them while they are talking to you. You are able to see the verbal and non-verbal components of the client.
Some strategies to demonstrate empathy would be to non-judgmental, which would allow you to keep an open line of communication. Listening actively, recognize emotions, restate the problem and ask permission to move forward. By doing all of these things the social worker will have a clear understanding for the clients situation. Also this will let the client know you as a social worker understand and are going to do your best so that he/she will have positive results. This puts a positive impact on the client and they will not ever hesitate to contact the social worker and always be able to talk freely and not be judged and this is a safe zone for the client.
“Empathy is simply listening, holding space, without judgement, emotionally connecting, and communicating and communicating that incredibly healing message of you’re not alone.”(Brene Brown)
