The Toy Store Assignment

The Toy Store Assignment

There is not that much of Toy stores in our area. For that reason, the two stores I visited were kind of similar to each other, only few differences.

In my visit to two different toy sections in different markets, I was comparing the way toys are displayed for both genders, weather they were separated or not, the overall vibes I got from being in the section, Comparing the different board games for both genders and the aspects of each, comparing the stereotypes these different stores presented for both gender, also comparing the many types of Barbie dolls in each store and how different these are from the other store, and I will be comparing all that with games I used to play when I was a little and if its still around these days.

Starting with Walmart-Irvine, the way toys were displayed was kind of chaos. The toys weren’t really separated into two sections for each gender, but were divided by a sign dividers, or colors. Princess theme for girls and car races for boys were the theme, which was the only way to know for which gender I was shopping.

On the other hand, Target-Tustin “the district”, toys were orderly age & gender displayed, there were three very organized sections; babies, boys and girls sections.

Excitement, competitive and energy were the overall feeling of the boys’ section at Walmart. Shelves were all in blue & black color.

Where in Target, the theme wasn’t really about Gender colors, but the characters in each section games were the theme of each aisle.

In both stores different cars and puzzles of car racing, war soldiers and war tools were the majority of the boys’ toys. If I would buy a game for my son, It would probably be one of the “Lego” puzzles or the figuring-the-missing-peace-while-building game, because I think these games develop child’s critical thinking and improve creativity.

Beauty and fashion were the overall feeling of the girls’ section. Pink, red and purple colors were all over the section at Walmart. Fashionable clothes, hairbrushes, tiny heels, make up kits, Barbies, and babies with their own beds were most of the girls’ toys.

Where in Target, it was very different from how it is in Walmart. Girls toys varies, it wasn’t all about fashion and dolls, but also profession tools for kids to wear, and many other toys where girls will have their own castle and learn how to make it clean and tidy, huge kitchen and clinic with tools a well, also many pets games are provided. So the overall feeling was how creative girls can be.

If I would pick a toy to buy it to my daughter, it would probably be one of the castle or clinics that she would build and keep cleaning and working on it, or maybe an accessories maker, because I think it is important for young girls to learn how to love and take a good care of their own houses & careers because its just a women’s nature.

In Walmart, There was a whole section for board games, one thing I noticed that games weren’t separated, so it was hard for me to know wither its an adults, kids, or family games, and most of the games were unisex games.

Where in Target, Its was devided intio family, girls, & boys board games sections.

I was in love with the board games that both Walmart & target provides, so many educational games that bring a lot of fun while learning. There were a puzzle games, cards, monopoly, building different things, and dominos. I picked 4 best board games in my opinion that if I were to have children, I would absolutely buy them.

In Walmart, First game is the Matching Disney princess for girls, it is one of the fun & learn games; girls should match the picture of the princess with the most popular thing she’s known of. That would increase the child’s thinking level and learn how to remember & connect between things.

Where for boys, I picked the BATTLESHIP game; it’s a game where the player creates a plan to attack the other player, and tries to take most of the other player’s equipment. It is good to improve the competition aspect in our child.

In Target, the second girls’ game I picked was the 6-in-1 Frozen game. It’s a kit of a Frozen characters’ game where you can play in 6 different ways with it. Girls can play Bingo, Go fish, Crazy 8’s, Four-in-a-Row, Dominos, Matching all in one kit and same cards and board. Its great since these games are fun and make children think their way to win the game, and also how to use one thing in many different ways.

Where for boys, which I think it works for both boys and girls, but it was in the boys’ section, is the FIBBER game, it’s a cards game, which you would say the card sign you have, but if your turn comes up and u don’t have a passing card u should lie about it, if other players caught you lying, you have to add a peace to your nose, and the loser ho has the longest nose upon other players. It teaches that the liar would lose and the end which is a great concept for the game.

Overall fashion and beauty were the girls’ section stereotype, war and races were the boys’ section stereotype in Walmart.

Careers, houses and pets were the girls’ section stereotype, adventure and builders were the boys’ stereotype in Target.

In my childhood, I used to play profession games with my friends and cousins more than playing with toys. We used to take roles on being a teacher, doctor or a mother. Now a days, there are new interesting games for children that can develop their learning in a better way we used to have and even provided with tools which helps to experience the whole thing like its happening, also provide a new and better ideas to games we used to play in our childhood.

From my visit to Barbie section in walmart, there were too many kinds of Barbie doll, like Bratz,Katy & many different dolls. dolls were all either a fashion stars, models, or singers.

in the other hand, Target has dolls and Barbies with all professions; the doctors, yoga instructors, hair stylists, baker, and fashion girls.

The positive respective among these different kinds of Barbie, that is makes it easier for little girls to experience each profession and know if this what they want to be when they grow up or not, also learn how to make or deal with different and new things. But, I think that the way these dolls are clothed may impact negatively on little girls, because the doctor Barbie wears a very short uniform and has all glitter on her eyes and lips and wears long heels, which in real world, doctors are way to far from this image and more conservative toward their look, and more respective to their jobs.
