file comm is the question.
This exercise will have you analyzing a number of different news sources of your choosing to identify and evaluate the claims contained within.
Select any two news stories from the “Current Events” thread. If none of these catch your attention (or, no one’s posted any), you may pick your own. Please have it be a relatively current event (occurring within the last year, at least. In your initial post, please include the following:
1) The key claims of the piece that you read (indicate if they areclaims of fact, value, or policy and why you believe so)
2) Evaluate the strength of this source based on either tests of evidence by Verlinden, or the CRAAP test
3) Finally, assess the overall strength of the source:Do you think that overall, it presents a strong argument or not? Why or why not?
Read over at least 1 article from one of your peers. Indicate the following:
Discuss any claims not mentioned by your classmates (if it’s a fact, value or policy argument)
Pick the position opposite of your classmate’s final assessment: In other words, if they say it’s a strong source, indicate reasons in which is might be a weak argument overall, or vice versa.
Response to this as well…

The key claim of this article is to show to willingness of Taiwanese’s government to defend themselves. To send a message to China and tell them that they will not give up easily.

In these two other sources shows the statistics of the willingness for Taiwanese citizens to defend themselves if China is trying to invade Taiwan. The first source was the government that claims that “Will fight to the very last day”, and the two other sources provides evidence for it by gathering statistics of the willingness for Taiwanese citizens to fight for their country.
I believe the strength of the source is strong and it does presents a strong argument and statement, because from statistics we can clearly see that over the years the percentage of the people that are willing to fight increases after the government have made the statement that they “will fight to the very last day”.
Verlinden’s Tests of Evidence
When creating an argument or analyzing an argument, the presence of evidence is not enough:One must analyze the strength and validity of the evidence. Whenever you look at any piece of evidence or citation, consider the following six areas when evaluating a source (Verlinden, 2005):
– Does source have the appropriate background?
– Does the source have the required knowledge?
– Does the source have sufficient expertise?
-Does the source represent a particular interest or perspective?
-Does the source claim objectivity?
-Does the source have preconceived ideas that may color their judgment?
-What “invisible” biases might exist (how does culture or upbringing influence it)?
-Does the evidence come from the appropriate time period?
-Are there any contradictory statements in the source?
-Is enough information provided?
-Does the original source provide some background information?
Corroboration (a.k.a. external consistency)
-Do other qualified sources agree with the evidence?

The CRAAP Test
The CRAAP test is a handy acronym you can use to evaluate websites or other sources:
-Currency:Similar to the recency test from Verlinden, is the source current (where appropriate)
-Relevance:How closely tied to your subject is this source? Is it tangential or not?
-Authority:Is the source qualified to speak/write on this topic? (similar to “source credibility” from Verlinden)
-Accuracy:How reliable and truthful is this information? (This combines internal and external consistency from Verlinden)
-Purpose:Why does this source exist in the first place? What’s the motivation behind it?
https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2021/12/17/robbery-crew-targets-asians-san-jose/ (Links to an external site.)
This article talks about how Asians in the Bay Area are being targeted, which makes them fearful for themselves but specifically for the elderly Asian people. Edwards’ (2021) online article states the following:
Police say a six-man crew committed more than 70 robberies, burglaries and thefts in San Jose alone and at least 177 in cities throughout the San Francisco Bay area. The robberies not only affected the victims but also the Asian community writ large as the specter of violence scared people trying to run errands. (para. 4)
This statement is a fact.
According to the CRAAP test this is a good source to use.
I believe this source has a lot of good information about the elderly Asian people who are being targeted. This article has a good argument because it states a lot of facts that have occurred recently.
https://www.cnn.com/2022/01/27/us/anti-asian-hate-crimes-san-francisco-lawsuit/index.html (Links to an external site.)
In this online article, it states, “ Anti-Asian hate crimes in San Francisco spiked 567% in 2021, San Francisco officials said this week.”, which is a fact. This article also talks about the San Francisco lawsuit, which accuses the DA not doing enough.
According to the CRAAP test, this online article is a good source to use that correlates with the topic.
I believe it would a great source to refer to for my topic in regards to the rise of Asian Hate Crimes. This source has a good argument. I’m an Asian woman living in the Bay Area, and I have plenty of friends, family, classmates, and coworkers who are Asian as well. This is relevant current event and I feel like the justice system hasn’t done much to help or protect the AAPI community.
