Although it isn’t my first choice to get a career in childcare once I finish my degree, this course has opened my eye to the possibilities of careers with working with children and families in general. One significant thing I have gained from this course is that curriculum planning is much like regular planning. Having strategies, systems and considering the environment are ways to build not only a successful curriculum for children but also a regular routine for our adult lives as well. Second, I have learned what kid of assessments to use to get to know children and families. Prior to this class, I used standard practices such as lists and such to get to know children. However, I now know there are multiple assessments to gather information about children and families to make their time successful in classrooms. Third, I learned more about the different developmental stages children go through. Because I worked with infants and limited time with preschool, I didn’t know much about the other ages because of where my focus was with infant development. Our text explains cognitive, mathematical and science development for children of all ages.

One challenge that I have overcome during this course is how to incorporate different developmental milestones and creating a curriculum that incorporates individual learning. I have always found myself altering things to engage children individually however after this course I now understand how to do that within my curriculum.

One accomplishment that I have achieved during this course is that I feel confident that I am able to create a power point/presentation about developmental practices that occur in schools and childcare centers. I have always doubted my skills on being able to create a presentation for parents/directors and that my information may not be presented successfully, but since creating one as an assignment, I feel more confident in doing so.

I view the relationship between assessment, curriculum and instruction to be the way children learn. Using all of the above during the day can help stay organized with teaching children what they “need” to learn and to help children as individuals focus on what they should be focusing on.

I feel prepared to excel into the Week Five Final Project. I know that I can use my current knowledge from previous weeks and current resources to help develop a successful final project for week five. So far, I have gathered information needed for my project and begin writing a rough draft. Additional support I might need is narrowing down my resources and focusing on the topic.
