What skill(S) do you think an effective leader should develop that would enable them to spend more time on management issues?

One skill that I believe would make an effective leader spend less time on management issues is the ability to delegate and regulate responsibility to others. If the leader spends all their time performing tasks they will spend less time managing. Whom can the leader manage if they are the only ones performing work? A good leader has to know when to delegate and what tasks to delegate. Working with individual that the leader can trust makes leading a little less difficult (Covey, 1991). The leader must believe that others have the ability to perform. The leader must believe that the members on their team are motivated to achieve the objective or mission of the group. It does not mean that the team members all have the best skills, but it means that the leader trust that the members will work to do all that they can to be successful. According to Covey (1991), leadership is about learning how to be a supervisor. A supervisor delegates and not try to do it all.


Is management an art or a science and/or both?

According to the Encyclopedia of Management (6th Edition), management is both an art and a science. Management as a science is based on the management practicing certain situations and believe that there is a rational or objective for the correct action to situations. The manage practicing management as a science will follow general theories and practices on how to improve a situation based on principles, according to the Encyclopedia of Management (6th Edition. A manager that follows the art perspective of management do not believe that scientific principles are the response to all situations (Encyclopedia of Management, 6th Edition). The manager practicing management has an art will more than likely reply on using their own knowledge about a situation to determine what course of action to take to resolve an issue.


Identify an approach in Covey (1991) that can be used for resolving managerial issues.

An approach that is mentioned by Covey (1991, p. 119) to resolve managerial issues is to refrain form saying the unking or negative thing to an employee. A manager must never take their frustration out on their followers. The manager must learn how to exercise patience and learn how to distinguish between the person and the behavior or performance of the employee (Covey, 1991. The manager can disapprove of a behavior or performance but must understand how to communicate that to an employee without trying to tear the employee down.
