Enrico Saturnino: Multimodal arguments can be powerful and effective when used correctly. Figure 1.2 stood out to me, especially considering the recent climate surrounding the topic (pun not intended), so I’ll be analyzing that one in particular for this post. Figure 1.2’s main issue is highlighting the danger of global warming, and it does a fantastic job at explaining the brevity of the situation while still keeping its message short and concise. By focusing mainly on perspective, the image of the polar bear hopelessly attempting to make do with what little ice it calls home while surrounded by a vast body of water makes most of us not only recognize the problem, but also feel empathy as we are more likely to draw the relation between the bear’s home to ours and wonder if we were put into the same situation, should global warming continue and it starts affecting us in our cities. This figure makes no attempt to highlight the imminent threat of global warming, and the word “Problems” only magnifies the topic more as this is not how “home” should be for the polar bears and the rest of the species living in this environment; further aiming at our natural compassion and alarming need to preserve and survive as we would not want this happening to us.

Desi Gonzalez: Multimodal arguments are visuals that contain a heavy amount of information and background to convey a message or lesson to the viewer. Figure 1.2 displays a polar bear stranded on a lone piece of ice surrounded by the ocean. The word “Problems” appears very prominently at the bottom of the picture. This picture highlights the dangerous issue of global warming. It effectively shows this issue by showing the lonesome, isolated situation the polar bear is in. The word “Problems” only highlights the dire situation the polar bear is in. No animal should suffer from such extreme conditions. The picture is ultimately effective, as it portrays the fact that while humans may be able to endure global warming, it greatly harms the life of animals. The polar bear’s entire world is in danger, and the entire arctic ecosystem is soon to follow.
