Public Policy Problem Solution

In 400-500 words, write a pitch that catches the attention of your audience and succinctly makes your case for a solution to a problem. Choose any topic you like and know about. It does not have to be a public policy topic. You may choose to write about a problem with recycling in your community or with the availability of organic foods in the city. The topic is unimportant. What matters here is honing in on a problem – any problem – and making a case for a solution. You need to clearly present the problem and your proposed solution, then make an excellent case for your solution. Your audience is the general public, so please assume that your audience knows nothing about your topic.

Your pitch should be 400-500 words long and include:

A powerful first sentence that grabs your readers by introducing your problem AND the proposed solution. Keep this sentence to 30-40 words maximum. The shorter the better. If you could give your reader only one sentence, this would be it, so make it powerful.

A clear and concise description of the problem, along with the impact.

A clear and concise description of your solution, along with arguments about why your proposal would work.

If you have compelling data, use it to make your case. Your pitch may or may not include a very brief acknowledgment of the opposing view and why it is flawed.
