Classroom Observation – Dunlap

Effective teachers always reflect on the lesson, and lesson outcomes. Listen as the teacher reflects on this lesson, and compare it to the responses you have written on the observation worksheet. Use both the teacher’s reflections and your own observation when writing your overall observational reflection.

1. Notice that Mrs. Dunlap begins each period with a warm-up of some sort. Warm- ups may review material covered in a previous class or gauge the level of working knowledge the students have about a new concept.
2. Why does Mrs. Dunlap utilize the sticks when choosing students to call on to answer questions? Respond to this on your reflection page.
3. Notice how Mrs. Dunlap helped a student answer the question with the use of scaffolding. Mrs. Dunlap provided wait time to allow the student the opportunity to process and think about what their answer should be and when the student still struggled, she provided additional support to the student.
4. Mrs. Dunlap is about to have students recite the objective for the lesson. What is her purpose in doing this? Reflect.
5. Mrs. Dunlap has implemented a blended learning instructional model in her classroom. This means that students receive instruction from both the teacher and through technology. Students are usually able to work at their own pace and really personalize the learning for themselves in this flipped classroom.
6. How do you think a blended learning environment benefits the students? How does it benefit the teacher? Reflect.
7. As mentioned previously, students are able to work at their own pace. They can rewind lecture videos, do activities more than once and use online discussion boards to share ideas or get help from peers. By implementing the blended learning model in her

classroom, Mrs. Dunlap is able to devote more time to addressing the various needs of
her students, whether that is providing extra support for struggling students or extending the learning for students that have already mastered concepts.
8. By giving students the words that correlate with the symbols, Mrs. Dunlap is exposing her students to terms they may see on tests, quizzes or standardized assessments. It is important to vary your verbiage as a teacher in order to help students to decipher what word problems are asking and which operations to use.
9. Which teaching strategy and assessment strategy is Mrs. Dunlap using here? Reflect.
10. During this example, Mrs. Dunlap uses student input to determine which problem to guide them through. Since this is a more difficult problem, Mrs. Dunlap asks questions and gives them strategies to try to figure it out on their own before reviewing the answer with them.
11. What has Mrs. Dunlap accomplished by asking students to provide her with a strategy for writing inequality statements? Reflect.
12. Effective teachers always reflect on the lesson, and lesson outcomes. Listen as the teacher reflects on this lesson, and compare it to the responses you have written on the observation worksheet. Use both the teacher’s reflections and your own observation when writing your overall observational reflection.
13. Should you decide to implement a flipped classroom, Mrs. Dunlap makes an excellent point about making sure you do not become simply a babysitter. In a flipped classroom, you are still the teacher and thus must ensure that students are getting and absorbing the information or skills you want them to. Mrs. Dunlap mentions pre- teaching before or reflecting after the technology piece as different strategies to ensure maximum impact from your blended learning environment.
Following the completion of the video, reflect on the observation in its’ entirety and submit.
