Book Review Assignment Instructions
Overview
The readings for the course have hopefully provided some insights into the world of political communication. Although we have taken in manageable bits during the course, we appraise the overall value of our effort and information digested to determine what will stay with us as we move on toward other academic endeavors. This evaluation is a measured in three parts: summary, critique and application.
Instructions
Write a book review on Creatures of Politics. Be sure to examine the Book Review Grading Rubric before starting this assignment.
The review must be 4–6 pages. Format the body of your review in 3 main sections: summary, critique, and application. Do not summarize or critique the chapters chronologically. Consider the book as a whole. Avoid excessive quotations. State the authors’ main points in your own words and give specific page references when paraphrasing. The review must follow current Turabian guidelines. A title page and reference page are not required for this project.
· Summary
Summarize the main theme of the book. What is the overall perspective, purpose, or argument of the book? If the author wanted you to get one idea from the book, what would it be?
· Critique
What is your opinion of the book? Was the author biased in the writing? If so, in what way? Did the author accomplish the intended purpose of the book? Why or why not? Who is the intended audience?
· Application
This section will demonstrate how the book has enhanced your understanding of political communication with examples from past or current campaigns and the media. You must also introduce new ideas (such as how a campaign could have more effectively used a tactic from the book) that go beyond the book if they complement ideas you have gleaned from reading.
