In this module, you have read about the current focus on the conditions affecting this 21st century: Topics like “the threat of nuclear annihilation and terrorist attack, the proliferation of dangerous drugs, outbreaks of lethal diseases, and the threatened destruction of Earth’s vital resources” as well as “the era’s pervasive prejudices and privileges associated with gender, race, class, and sexual orientation” along with “social and political chaos…massive influxes of refugees…and the hovering threat of nuclear war.” (Cohen & Sherman, p. 248- 249)
As diversity is of utmost importance in this decade, choose a marginalized group—whether identified by gender, race, class, sexual orientation, or disability—and complete this application project:
Imagine that you are a playwright who is pitching an idea to a production company.
Introduce the focus of the new play and the reason why you believe this play will have an impact on the audience.
Suggest a setting for the play (time and place) and give a reason for this choice of setting. Suggest two or more characters and their roles in the play. [It takes at least two characters to create conflict, the basis of a play.]
Describe what the audience will see and hear when the play begins.
Describe what the audience will see and hear in the last minutes of the performance.
